Tips for Web 2.0 Design

Web 2.0, a new phenomenon that changed the way people use Internet, has been described in various ways including the new way of designing websites. This wave of technology has allowed greater sharing of information through its user-friendly interfaces. As a result a whole new world of web commumities, sites and blogs has evolved, making the internet a larger and better platform to share information and content. If you want to be a part of this process, design your web site keeping few things in mind.

  • Web 2.0 design means simpler than ever. So just keep it simple and focused on the core functionality and keep as less features as possible to achieve the desired objective.
  • Try to remove all unnecessary visual elements. This will keep the user focuses on the key content and navigation.
  • Use fixed central layout instead of liquid layout which covers the full screen. This will leave more of white spaces which are soothing to look at and present what you want to in a much focused manner.
  • Make global navigation bold and add text which lets users easily identify what each link will do. Also, differentiate the navigation links using colors and styles so that users easily know where they are on the website.
  • Use bold logos. The logo represents your brand and is needless to say that it should be displayed prominently on the website. I will not say much about the type of logo to be used i.e. text or image based logo; just keep them bold and visually appealing.
  • Web 2.0 design uses bigger text. It is comfortable for users to notice the important text in a better and easy manner.
  • Use bold colors. Divide your page into different sections using different colors to draw user’s attention wherever you want to.
  • Use icons and badges. Ever noticed a “Beta” flash or “RSS” icon on the website. These icons and flashes are two ways to display a key functionality or an important announcement to the site visitors.
