Tips to Enhance Readability

Readability is a crucial aspect of designing. The easier the reading, the more likely it is that people will stay on the website. You could lose a lot of visitors, if they have to strain their eyes to read what the website has to say. Here’s what you can do to enhance readability:

  • Color combination: Black background with a gray font… spare me the torture, please! You have to ensure good contrast between the color of the background and the color of the font.
  • Overpowering background: Avoid making the background overpowering. Select textures against which the text can be read easily.
  • Font size: The font size for the text should not be too small and should be the same throughout the text. You can use a bigger font size (or bold) for headings and sub-headings. Use italics or bold to highlight important words or phrases, instead of changing their color or underlining them.
  • Bullets and numbers: Mark lists with bullets or numbers.
  • Text area should be distinct: Keep navigation separate from the text area and very distinctly so. Also underline the links and do not underline anything that is not a link.
  • Leave space: Leave a good amount of space between words, between paragraphs and between columns. You don’t want the text to look cramped.

Content is King… but only when users can read it! So make sure you do not compromise on legibility and readability.
