Here is a list of some really irritating web design elements. Many competed fiercely to get into the list!
1. Using Frames
When a page is split into frames, it is extremely confusing for users. They no longer know what to expect. Usability is particularly affected in terms of printing, bookmarking and navigation.
2. Animations that Run Constantly
Constantly running animations distract users and make the text really difficult to read. Spare users from having to deal with moving / blinking images!
3. No Color Change of Visited Links
For users, links form the foundation of the navigation process. When the color of visited links changes, it helps users to know what his/her current location is on the website and decide where he/she wants to go next.
4. Heavy Graphics that Take Forever to Download
Most of us are willing to wait all of 10 seconds for a web page to open. If a page does not open quickly most people will lose interest and navigate away from it.
5. Orphan Pages
An orphan page is one that does not have a link back to the originating page. If the user feels lost, you’ve lost the user! All the pages on your website should link back to the homepage and to other relevant pages on your website.
6. Low Readability
Putting text in one long paragraph, long scrolling pages, using a dark background with poor color contract for the text and using too many fonts are some of the mistakes that make text difficult to read.
Here is a great project that takes popular products and simplify their packaging design. The designers accomplish to reach to me with each of their “simple variation” of the product packaging and even if I didn’t know about the that product it would definitely catch my eye.
You may ask what’s a landing page and how is it different than any other page on your site. Simply put any page on your site can be a landing page.
I wrote a post last, Breakdown Time of the Modern Web Design, that shows what percentage of their time web designers and developers spent on fixing bugs for IE.
